Pop up shops are back!

Budding entrepreneurs, community groups and local artists can set up their own temporary high street shop, rent and rate free, thanks to an innovative scheme run by Waltham Forest Council.

Following its success last year, the pop-up shop scheme gives residents the chance to test their business idea, run a community project or showcase their artwork from a site right in the heart of the high street for free.

Last time, an online bakery, a speciality tea shop and a pop-up yoga studio offering free yoga sessions were just some of the projects to take up the free space.

In this round, Hoe Street Central, a shop in the heart of Walthamstow town centre, and 76 Old Church Road in Chingford Mount, are available for periods of two to six weeks from September until March 2015.

Anyone wanting to book a slot has until 22 August to apply for a space at either site, with slots starting from September.

Cllr Clare Coghill, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and High Streets, said: “This scheme is a great way of supporting local entrepreneurs and businesses who are just starting out, as well as filling shops that for whatever reason, have become vacant.

“We want to create thriving high streets that people want to visit and we’ll be selecting projects that will offer something interesting and unique in both Walthamstow and Chingford. While our powers on the high street are sometimes limited, for example stopping betting shops from opening where they choose to, we’re determined to use the powers we do have to give residents the kind of high streets we know they want.”
