Council works with partners to build borough homes

The need for more homes is one that is constantly in the news and local authorities have a role to play in encouraging sustainable home-building in their boroughs.

In Waltham Forest the Council recently launched a four year housing partnership plan, identifying Preferred Housing Providers. At an event held on 20 June, Housing Associations and private developers met with senior council officers and the new Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Khevyn Limbajee.

The work the Council has been doing to facilitate regeneration in the borough was outlined at the meeting and the need for affordable and sustainable housing discussed.

“This borough is bursting with potential,” said Cllr Limbajee. “It’s incredibly important that the growth and renewal in the borough is also reflected in the provision of really good quality housing. To assure that we must work closely with those people who are looking to build here.”

Earlier this year the Hammond Court development in Walthamstow, built by East Thames Housing Association, was named by Inside Housing in its Top 50 UK Affordable Housing Developments list and as one of the Top Five Sustainable Developments.

The eight organisations that make up the Preferred Housing Provider partnership for 2014-2018 are CBHA/Peabody, Circle Housing Group, East Thames, Family Mosaic, Home Group, North River Alliance, Lovell and Swan Housing Group.
