Gappy Ranks to headline at the Leyton Big Weekender festival 2014

British reggae superstar Gappy Ranks will be headlining the annual Leyton Big Weekender this year on Saturday 19 July at the Leyton Cricket Ground in High Road Leyton E10 6RJ.


Gappy will be playing to packed crowds on the Saturday at the free two-day family festival and he will be joined by members of top reggae band, UB40 and their tribute band, UB42. Local artist Tina T, DJ Daddy Ernie and a lively steel pan band will also help residents and visitors soak up the vibrant atmosphere.


Leader of the Council, Chris Robbins, said:


“This is a popular event that gets bigger and better every year. There are many different activities to keep families happy and entertained and we’d like everyone to come along and join in the fun.”


The stage programme will begin at 1pm and continue until 5.45pm on the Saturday and on both days people can enjoy local and international foods.


On the Sunday the Waltham Forest Caribbean Carnival, now in its 26th consecutive year, returns with specially designed colourful costumes and uplifting music and dance for all the family to enjoy. The procession will begin at 1pm from Leyton Cricket Ground and will return to the grounds at 2.30pm.


The weekend will also see a funfair and kids can jump around on the pirate ship bouncy castle or join in the activities in the allocated play zone. A host of other activities include a revolving climbing wall, bungee trampoline, 9 hole crazy golf, pedal karts, garden games and bungee trampoline, will keep the whole family entertained. There will also be a Segway assault course for those who want to stay fit, a rodeo bull and a surf simulator.


As a free event, there will be no tickets needed. There will also be no glass bottles allowed onsite. Road closures will be in place on Sunday 20 July due to the Carnival and there will be heavy local parking restrictions over the weekend.


Visitors are encouraged to use public transport, however, there will be bicycle parking at the venue.
