Borough boosted by opening of latest new-look leisure centre

Residents in the south of the borough made a splash today (Tuesday 28 October) at the official opening of the new-look Leytonstone Leisure Centre.

Complete with a fully refurbished 25m main pool, teaching pool and poolside sauna, the opening represents the latest stage of Waltham Forest Council’s ambitious £24.5million programme which will see improvements to all of the borough’s six leisure centres before the end of 2016.

In addition to the new pool area, the centre – formally known as Cathall Leisure Centre – now boasts a new reception with fast track entry, two-court sports hall, 100-station fitness suite, a soft play area, multi-purpose room, a refurbished studio and brand new changing areas for all activities.

The centre opened its doors to the public last week, ahead of today’s official relaunch, and already more than 150 new members have signed up to take advantage of the new facilities.

Council leader Chris Robbins and the borough’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Ahsan Khan, were joined by representatives from Better, which runs the Council’s gyms, and sprint sensation Bianca Williams, who won Bronze for England in the 200m earlier this year at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, at the relaunch event this morning.

Cllr Robbins said: “Our multi-million pound leisure centre improvement programme - part of our ‘creating a better place’ campaign - is ensuring that residents have the best facilities available.

“The new centre in Leytonstone has been completely transformed and now offers a host of fantastic features for local families and residents of all ages to enjoy.”

Cllr Khan, said: “We’re making sure that all residents have access to first-class leisure facilities to help them stay fit and healthy.

“Whether it’s free swimming for under 18s, over 60s and disabled people, state-of-the art gym equipment and exercise spaces or soft play areas for youngsters, we want everyone to have opportunities to get active whatever their age or ability.

“We hope the borough’s new-look leisure centres will help residents improve and maintain their physical and emotional health and wellbeing as well as act as training grounds for young people looking to begin a lifetime of sporting achievement.”

Leytonstone Leisure Centre, in Cathall Road, closed on 3 November 2013 for improvement work. Since then, the building has been extended, while the internal areas have been remodelled and refurbished with new equipment.

The Council has six leisure centres, all of which are run by social enterprise Better, and each one has been or will be improved as part of the major regeneration programme. Work at Leytonstone follows refurbishment at Chingford Leisure Centre, improvements at Leyton Gym and Walthamstow Leisure Centre and a major transformation of Leyton Leisure Centre.

Waltham Forest’s leisure centres offer a range of leisure opportunities, including sports pitches and courts, fully-equipped gymnasiums, exercise classes and 25m swimming pools. Those with pools offer free swimming for under 18s, over 60s and disabled people.
