Walthamstow museums on hunt for volunteers

Can you spare a few hours each month? Want to meet new people or spruce up your CV? Then Walthamstow’s William Morris Gallery wants to hear from you.

The Gallery and its sister museum, Vestry House, have launched a volunteer recruitment drive to fill a variety of voluntary roles. If you enjoy meeting the public you could welcome visitors, help out at talks or assist with children’s activities. Or if you prefer working behind-the-scenes, you could help document the collection or support the marketing team.

The Gallery will host two volunteer open days from 10am – 5pm on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October, where prospective volunteers can learn about available roles, meet staff and find out how to apply. The open days are free and there’s no need to book. For more information email: wmg.volunteer@walthamforest.gov.uk.

Chris Robbins, Leader of Waltham Forest Council which owns and runs the William Morris Gallery, said:

“We’re fortunate to have fantastic cultural facilities in Waltham Forest and even more fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteers involved in the running of them.

“Our volunteers don’t need to have experience of museums or galleries, we’re looking for people who want to do something worthwhile with their free time or perhaps want to learn a new skill and add to their CV. And if they have an interest in the arts, even better!”

All volunteers recruited through the programme have access to free training and advice.

About the William Morris Gallery

The William Morris Gallery is the only public gallery devoted to William Morris: designer, craftsman and radical socialist. Housed in the grade II* listed building that was Morris's family home from 1848 to 1856, the Gallery reopened in August 2012 following a major redevelopment that attracted widespread public and press acclaim.

The Gallery, which is owned and run by Waltham Forest Council, is the Art Fund’s Museum of the Year 2013 and has been nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2014.

The Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am - 5pm; admission is free.
