Good progress for Chingford primary school

A primary school in Chingford is making strong strides towards a successful future, according to Ofsted.

Longshaw Primary School, in Longshaw Road, was placed in special measures following an inspection by the education watchdog in February this year. However, an Ofsted inspector made a follow-up visit to the school last month, and has written to Longshaw’s headteachers praising the improvements that have been made.

After the inspection in February, Waltham Forest Council brokered a partnership between Longshaw and Handsworth Primary School, a good-rated school in Highams Park – and the Ofsted inspector noted that senior leaders at Longshaw have benefitted from the expertise passed on by seasoned staff members at their partner school.

In her letter, the inspector acknowledged improved working between Longshaw’s governors and senior leaders. She found that “leaders and governors have gained the support of staff and parents with ease and are showing flair to improve outcomes and change the status of the school” for a number of reasons.

They include “good quality training and development for all staff and leaders” and “a sharp focus on improving outcomes for disadvantaged pupils”.

The inspector also reported: “Communication has been consistent, clear, open and frequent. Senior leaders seek feedback and listen, as they are intent on improving pupils’ lives and futures.”

Cllr Mark Rusling, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We’re pleased to see Ofsted recognise the hard work of Longshaw’s staff, who have made many improvements in a relatively short space of time.

“From 1 January next year, Longshaw will no longer be in special measures as it becomes an academy under sponsorship from Silver Birch Academy Trust. I’m sure everyone involved at the school will be as reassured as we are that it will begin this new chapter in a strong position to build on the good work carried out and the progress made over the past several months.

“As well as wishing the school well for the future, I would also like to thank senior leaders at Handsworth for their fantastic work in helping Longshaw on to this positive path.”
