Wheels in motion for a cycling celebration

Waltham Forest will become London’s premiere cycling destination this September with the announcement that the borough will host two leading industry events.

Announced today in Newcastle at the third annual Cycle City Active City conference, Waltham Forest has been named to host the inaugural National Cycling Planning Awards on Monday 14 September and the 2015 London Cycling Show on Tuesday 15 September.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader of Waltham Forest Council and Cabinet Member for Environment said the Council is delighted to welcome both events to the borough.

“Today’s announcement reinforces that Waltham Forest is at the forefront in leading the charge on sustainable transport and environmental health.

“These events provide a great opportunity to celebrate and promote our achievements, including showcasing our ground-breaking £30million Mini-Holland Programme to fellow industry leaders from across Europe.”

Hosted in partnership with Landor LINKS the London Cycling Show is an industry event featuring a range of guest speakers, case studies, panel discussion and exhibitions on the latest cycling infrastructure, products and projects.

“Event participants will have the opportunity to take Mini-Holland site-visits and learn how the innovative programme is making Waltham Forest a safer, healthier and more attractive place to live, work and enjoy through increasing the number of people walking and cycling in the borough,” said Cllr Loakes.

The National Cycle Planning Awards will be the first event of its kind and feature a range of categories, including two Council-driven awards open to Waltham Forest schools in the categories of: ‘Active Travel’ and a ‘Design a Sign Competition’.

Cllr Loakes remarked that the two events were extremely timely and would coincide with a major stage of the Mini-Holland Programme.

“As a perfect lead-in to these events, on Monday 14 September the Council will be holding celebrations to mark the official opening of the Mini-Holland Waltham Village section.

“This will include a street party on Orford Road, and will be a chance for locals and visitors alike to come along, whether by foot or bicycle, and enjoy our new public spaces.”

The 2015 National Cycling Planning Awards and London Cycling Show are sponsored by partners Project Centre, Riney and Ringway Jacobs and supported by Transport for London.
