Ballot open for senior resident’s Christmas meals

Residents aged 65 and over can now apply for tickets to the Council’s popular free Christmas meals events for senior residents through a new ballot system.

Waltham Forest Council is once again hosting three Christmas lunches and one dinner in Chingford, Leyton and Walthamstow for residents aged 65 and over.

Following the success of previous year’s events, places will be now be allocated through a random ballot system to ensure every applicant receives a fair opportunity to attend.

Guests will be treated to a tasty Christmas meal and festive entertainment, along with the chance to catch up with friends and neighbours and the opportunity to meet new people.

The events will take place on the following days:

  • Wednesday 9 December, 12–2.30pm at Leyton Orient Football Club (matchroom Stadium, Brisbane Road, E10 5NF)

  • Thursday 10 December, 12–2.30pm (lunch) and 6–8.30pm (dinner) at Walthamstow Assembly Hall (Forest Road, E17 6HE)

  • Friday 11 December, 12–2.30pm at Chingford Assembly Hall (The Green, Station Road, E4 7EN).

Telephone registrations can be made between Monday 19 and Friday 23 October, with phone lines open from 10am to 2pm. Residents are also able to register online until Friday 6 November.

When registering you will need to give your first and second choice of venue, full name, date of birth, email address (if applicable), home address, postcode, contact number and any specific requirements including dietary and accessibility needs.

You can register for a group totalling four people and will need to provide information for each person when registering.

When online registrations close on Friday 6 November, all people who have been randomly selected through the ballot process will receive written notification by Monday 23 November.

Due to the popularity of the event and various venue capacities, we are only able to accommodate a certain number of guests to our Christmas meals. If you do not receive confirmation, unfortunately you have not been successful for this year’s event.

Council Leader Chris Robbins said: “Events like the free Christmas meals are fantastic occasions that celebrate our older residents and acknowledge the valuable contribution they make to our community.

“And for those taking part, they’re always wonderful opportunities to get into the festive spirit while catching up with old friends and meeting new people.

“All of the four meals are incredibly popular events so if you’re keen to attend do make sure you enter the ballot, either by phoning before 23 October or by registering online by 6 November – and if you know someone aged 65 or over in Waltham Forest who would enjoy taking part please share this information with them.”

Telephone applications are open from Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October, phone 0161 259 0547 between 10am to 2pm. Standard call charges apply.
