En Garde! Fencing club set to launch

Two Olympic fencers will be putting budding young fencing enthusiasts through their paces later this month during a pilot sport scheme aimed at children aged eight to 14.

Olympians Richard Kruse and Alex Choupenitch will be joined by senior Olympic coach for Team GB Ziemek Wojchiechowski and seasoned coach David Standen as they host a new fencing club, which offers anyone interested a chance to try their hand at the sport under the guidance of experts.

Taking place at Walthamstow Assembly Hall from 27 December until 30 December, the scheme has been organised by Waltham Forest Council, in partnership with ZFW Fencing and with sponsorship from international food wholesalers Wanis.

The fencing club’s aim is to encourage residents to get active over the Christmas holidays – and if successful, the Council hopes to be able to organise further fencing sessions at future holiday camps in the borough, including specially designed sessions to help increase participation amongst young people who don’t generally play sport.

Cllr Ahsan Khan, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We hope this fencing club will offer our young people something new to try – while also keeping them physically active and mentally stimulated.

“As well as being fun, fencing helps teach respect and discipline. I would encourage anyone interested to give it a go – it’s not every day they’ll have the chance to learn under the guidance of world class fencers and coaches.”

ZFW Forest Fencing Club takes place from 9am to 3pm on 27, 28, 29 and 30 December at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, in Forest Road, Walthamstow. Tickets cost £20 per day for Waltham Forest residents, while for non-residents it is £40 per day.

Places can be booked by visiting www.forestvenues.london or by going to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/zfw-forest-fencing-run-by-team-gb-olympic-coach-tickets-27929913122.

ZFW Forest Fencing Club is sponsored by Tropical Sun of Wanis International Foods.
