Schoolchildren hit the right notes at Christmas carol concert

Christmas cheer was in full swing this month when a huge choir of 270 primary school children from across the borough sang to a packed audience at the Waltham Forest Civic Carol Concert.

Coordinated by Waltham Forest Council’s Music Service, the concert, which took place on Thursday 8 December at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, featured a mix of traditional and contemporary carols.

The Waltham Forest Youth Orchestra, Kelmscott School Choir and the JGL Choir performed Christmas music to help everyone feel festive.

The Mayor of Waltham Forest's Christmas message reiterated the theme of his Mayoral year, patience, understanding and tolerance – and all donations received on the night went to the Mayor's chosen charity, the Whipps Cross Bowel Cancer Unit.

Cllr Grace Williams, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We’re incredibly proud of all our young performers. They put a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm into rehearsals so that everyone who came to watch could enjoy an uplifting festive chorus.

“It’s wonderful to see so many young people getting the chance to embrace their musical passion through our music service – and I’d encourage anyone interested in music to find out for themselves what the service has to offer.”

Waltham Forest Music Service offers a wide variety of opportunities for young people to pick up and play a musical instrument – whether they're just starting out or looking to hone their skills.

The service runs a Music School at the end of the normal school day, selected free foundation group classes, instrumental and vocal tuition and instrument hire at an affordable price.

Any young person wanting to get involved with the music service can do so either by speaking to the Music Co-ordinator in their school or by contacting the Music Service. Visit or email
