Cargo bikes for hire

A cargo bike hire scheme has been launched as part of the Council’s £27million Mini-Holland programme. There are two cargo bikes available to rent – one for the school run or shopping and one for businesses so they can carry out deliveries.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, said, “We’re making these bikes available for hire free of charge so that they can be used as a taster before people commit to purchasing one themselves. Cargo bikes are great alternatives to the car and can be used for all sorts of journeys.”

Cargo bikes are human powered vehicles designed and constructed specifically for transporting loads. The Council has two types – the Christiania and the Omnium. The Christiania is strong, durable and versatile and gives parents who normally drive their children to school the opportunity to try cycling instead.

The Christiania bike is the family’s vehicle of choice for local trips to school and the shops in countries like Denmark, Holland and Sweden. It is designed to carry loads of up to 100kg with ease, and is very easy to power along with seven low gears. It has a bench, three point harness and waist belt to accommodate two children.

The Omnium is fast, light and manoeuvrable. Cargo bikes can be used for a variety of businesses and deliver a wide range of goods. The Omnium is not as wide as a three wheeled bike making it easier to filter through traffic to get to where you need to be quickly.

To hire a cargo bike for free, simply email the Council’s Mini-Holland team. Users will need to have an induction and quick road test and provide a refundable deposit of £100 on the day of pick up. Further terms and conditions of hire are available on the Mini-Holland website.

The Christiania is available to hire for between one and seven days and The Omnium for up to 14 days. For more information or to register your interest, email or visit
