Green Light for Green Courier Service

A grant has been secured from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund to deliver an emission-free courier service for residents and businesses in Waltham Forest. This will help to lessen congestion and improve air quality in the borough, complimenting work already taking place as part of the £27m Mini-Holland programme.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment said: “Receiving the funding to get our green courier service started is fantastic news. This scheme will be a ‘win-win’ for residents as they can leave their cars at home, have their goods delivered free of charge, and support local businesses in the process. We’re doing everything we can to improve air quality and reduce emissions across the borough, and this scheme will contribute to this. We’ll be keen to hear from local charities and community groups who may be interested in making use of the service.”

Waltham Forest Council will receive a grant from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund to deliver the scheme. This is a fund which supports new schemes and projects introduced by London boroughs to improve air quality.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson MP said: “Protecting the well-being of Londoners is vital and these great projects, coupled with my plans for the world’s first Ultra-Low Emission Zone in 2020, are part of the bold measures we need, along with the strong support of the Government and the EU, to win London’s pollution battle.”

The courier service will be available to residents shopping locally and businesses with local delivery needs, with deliveries available at agreed times. It will be a completely emission-free service, making use of vehicles such as cargo bikes.

The project will support the aims of the Mini-Holland programme as it will help to reduce congestion and private vehicle use, as well as reducing emissions – particularly in areas with poor air quality. It will also support the Council’s Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to work with residents, businesses and communities to help reduce their contribution and exposure to emissions.

The emission-free courier service will be available for residents and businesses later this year.
