Thousands gripped by carnival fever

More than 10,000 residents let their hair down on Sunday (3 July) when a Rio-themed carnival swept through the streets of Leyton.

Thousands came together in celebration at the Leyton Get Together in Leyton Sports Ground, Crawley Road, to enjoy music, food, family-friendly activities and the popular street carnival, which this year was in honour of Brazil hosting the 2016 Olympics.

Visitors were treated to a scintillating performance from double MOBO award-winning saxophonist Yolanda Brown, featuring guest artist Omar, in a mixed programme of soul, reggae and jazz compered by DJ Daddy Ernie.

The next of the Council’s big six summer events is the Walthamstow Garden Party, which takes place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July.

Acts already confirmed for the Barbican Music Stage include Ma Kalamity, Fanfare Ciocarlia and Asian Dub Foundation, and there will be a food festival, theatre, film, comedy, circus, and much more.

Hot on the heels of Garden Party is the Waltham Forest Mela on Sunday 31 July, followed by the Chingford Get Together on Saturday 13 August and finally the Leytonstone Get Together on Sunday 4 September.
