Update on Marlowe Road Development

Start of work on the Marlowe Road Estate in Walthamstow is now set to start in early autumn 2016. Waltham Forest Council and Countryside remain committed to £160million of investment and delivering new council homes for local residents.

Site preparation work at Marlowe Road had been targeted to start in July. Technical details of the development agreement between the Council and Countryside have taken longer to agree than anticipated, resulting in a short delay. Work is expected to start following the summer, with the official start of the first phase in September 2016.

Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “The Marlowe Road estate is home to a strong local community and we are committed to investing in it and creating new council homes. Everyone wants to get this project moving so even this short delay is regrettable. We are working and will continue to work closely with Countryside Properties to ensure that work starts as soon possible after the summer.”

Richard Cherry, Chief Executive Officer of Countryside’s Partnerships division said: “Countryside is fully committed to renewal of the Marlowe Road Estate, with £160 million of investment and 436 new homes, including 168 new homes for social rent and shared ownership. We are working closely with Waltham Forest Council on details of the development agreement for the site and both expect this to be agreed within weeks. We plan to start work on this ambitious and exciting development after the summer holidays, in the early autumn.”

Residents on the Marlowe Road estate will be receiving letters from the Council setting out the current situation and what this means for them. The basketball court and children’s play area will remain open throughout the summer holidays until work begins. After that a temporary replacement play area is being created as part of the project.
