Waltham Forest is best in London for top choice secondary school offers

The proportion of children being offered a place at their top choice secondary school is higher in Waltham Forest than anywhere else in London.

Ahead of the new academic year this September, Waltham Forest Council offered more than 81 per cent of young people a place at their preferred secondary school – the highest rate in the capital.

This is an increase since 2015/16, when the Council offered 75 per cent a place at their first choice school. The London total for first choice offers currently stands at 69 per cent.

Data released by the Pan-London Admissions Board showing on-time applications as at National Offer Day (1 March), also places Waltham Forest top in London for offering children a place at one of their six preferred secondaries, with nearly 98 per cent securing a place at one of their chosen schools.

This is a five percentage point increase compared to 2015/16, when Waltham Forest offered 93 per cent a place at one of their six preferred schools. The London total currently stands at 93 per cent.

Cllr Mark Rusling, Waltham Forest Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We’re absolutely committed to giving our young people the good-quality education they deserve at schools that meet their needs, so we’re incredibly pleased that we’ve been able to offer so many a place at one of their preferred secondaries.

“Being the best-performing council in London in this area is not only good news for our hard-working education officers, but most importantly it’s great news for local families, who can rest assured that we’re doing all we can to enable their children to continue learning and developing at a school of their choice.

“To that end, we will continue doing what we can to ensure we have enough places to meet demand, despite Government restrictions banning us from opening new schools.”

For the academic year 2016/17, there were 2,950 Year 7 places in Waltham Forest, and the Council received 2,573 on-time pupil applications.
