Time for Tennis

A new tennis membership scheme has launched in Waltham Forest – making it easier for residents to guarantee time on court whenever they want to play.

Under the new system, residents will be asked to join a scheme called Play Tennis Waltham Forest, which allows members to play unlimited tennis across the borough at a number of park facilities including Abbotts Park, Chingford Memorial Park and Lloyd and Aveling Park.

The result of a partnership between Waltham Forest Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the new scheme costs £30 for an entire year – meaning it’s less than 60p a week for members to play as much tennis as they like on one of the borough’s 18 high-quality courts or four mini courts. Alternatively, a £45 twelve-month family membership allows a resident and their family to play unlimited tennis.

Becoming a member enables residents to book courts up to seven days in advance – as well as giving them use of the LTA’s rewards app, which offers rewards for every time they take to the court.

Play Tennis Waltham Forest was officially launched on Thursday 12 May at Chingford’s Ridgeway Park courts – which have been transformed following improvement works funded by the Council, the LTA and Sport England. The park now boasts six new floodlit outdoor tennis courts, two mini tennis courts and a multi-use games area. The facility also has a brand new pavilion, LTA-licensed coaches and an affordable tennis programme to suit all ages and abilities.

John Golding, LTA Head of Region South East, said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Waltham Forest and to be able to support this fantastic refurbishment and redevelopment programme of courts in the area.

“The membership scheme offers individuals and families improved access to fantastic tennis facilities and this is crucial to our mission to get more people playing tennis more often.”

Courts in Abbotts Park, Chingford Memorial Park and Lloyd and Aveling Park will be free for Play Tennis Waltham Forest members. The new, state-of-the-art courts in Ridgeway Park can be used by members at a cost of £5 per hour.

High quality coaching is available at all Council venues for all levels, ages and abilities.
