New Repair Café to open in Leytonstone

A Repair Café in Leytonstone is opening its doors this month, giving residents the opportunity to get their electrical items, clothes and bikes fixed by trained professionals for free. There will also be free advice on how to upcycle furniture and clothes, which can all be enjoyed over a slice of cake.

The Repair Café will be located at St John the Baptist Church, Leytonstone (E11 1HB) and will take place on the third Saturday of each month, from 11am to 2pm. The first will take place on Saturday 22 April.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment said: “The new Repair Café will be a great way to give your broken items a new lease of life, and learn some valuable new skills such as how to upcycle furniture. Being able to fix or repair something rather than throwing it straight in the bin can be incredibly rewarding, and will also save you money.

“The Repair Café will be a pilot scheme initially, so I encourage residents to come down and get involved. If it proves successful we will look to roll these out across the borough.”

Waltham Forest Council is organising the Repair Cafes, in partnership with The Restart Project, Traid, Shed Homewares and Dr Bike. As well as carrying out repairs the experts will also provide free demonstrations and advice so residents can pick up some basic repair and upcycling skills in a relaxed setting.

Basic repair skills are incredibly useful to have as it means broken or unwanted items can be fixed up and made ready to use again. Repairing and reusing rather than throwing away is also better for the environment as it helps to reduce the amount of waste that gets sent to landfill.

The Church café will be open during the events so residents can enjoy some tea, coffee and cake while their items are being fixed.

Initial dates for the Repair Café are as follows –

  • 22nd April

  • 20th May

  • 17th June

  • 15th July

  • 16th September

  • 21st October
