Take the Feel Good challenge

If your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more often, the Council’s Feel Good Kick Start campaign could be just what you’re looking for.

Feel Good Kick Start will offer local people advice and opportunities to get active as part of our commitment to helping all residents stay healthy and happy.

Alongside the campaign, the Council is running a competition for two lucky people to win a year’s membership to all of the borough’s leisure facilities and help them get started to reach their goals.

To enter, all you have to do is send us a short video – no longer than 30 seconds – saying why you should win the membership and become a Feel Good Champion. Maybe you haven’t exercised for years, want to lose weight or have just quit smoking and it’s motivated you to improve your overall health.

Please send your videos to info@feelgoodwalthamforest.com. The winning residents must be 18 or over and be willing to provide daily updates using a video diary, photos and social media, to help inspire others to get active.

Along with a year’s membership to local leisure centres the winners will also receive an activity tracker – such as a Fitbit or Garmin – supported by the WF Feel Good rewards app – ‘FeelGoodWF’. The free lifestyle app tracks your activity levels, and allows you to join fitness challenges to unlock rewards, prizes and exclusive discounts.

Feel Good Kick Start will give everyone in Waltham Forest great tips and advice on how to improve their fitness levels. Through the Council’s Twitter and Facebook pages you’ll find information about the packed programme of activities on offer at our leisure centres, parks and local sports groups.

There will also be a series of ‘Feel Good in 15’ videos for anyone preferring to exercise at home. These short clips will show you how just 15 minutes of regular exercise can make a real difference to your life.

Cllr Ahsan Khan, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We’re committed to doing all we can to help residents lead healthy and active lives, from continuing to invest in leisure facilities to hosting an array of sporting opportunities for local people every year – regardless of age or ability.

“I’m looking forward to following the residents’ video diaries, and hope others will get behind them by sending messages of support on social media – or go even further by sharing their own efforts to make 2017 a more active year.”

Since 2012, the Council has invested £30million to upgrade all of the borough’s leisure centres, which are run by GLL. The investment culminated last September with the opening of Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre – one of the capital’s largest leisure complexes, and home to an extreme sports zone, including London’s first permanent ‘ninja run’ obstacle course.

In 2014, the Council became the first local authority to pilot the Our Parks initiative – a series of free activities in parks and open spaces for all ages and abilities, including circuit training, boot-camps, women-only exercise classes and yoga. There are currently more than 11,000 local people registered with Our Parks.

Chingford resident and keen ‘Parker’ Tracy Coates, said: “I’ve been attending Our Parks since summer 2015 after a friend told me about it. I do seven or eight classes a week. Since joining I have lost 2st 7lbs and for the first time ever it’s staying off and my diet is much healthier. I also have so much more energy.

“The sessions are hard but fun and it’s a great workout. There are all shapes and sizes and different ages and we all encourage each other. Although we work hard we do have fun. The trainers bond with all of us and if any of us need advice then they are on hand. I have made lots of friends and I’d recommend Our Parks to anybody. There’s something for everyone, whatever your level of fitness, so get involved!”

Waltham Forest is also home to a wide variety of clubs and sporting activities – whether you want to ice skate, give boxing or martial arts a go, try your hand at fencing or play your favourite team sport.
