Spring Clean Dates Revealed

Schools, businesses, community groups and individuals are being encouraged to take part in this year’s Waltham Forest Spring Clean, which takes place on 17, 18 and 19 March.

The annual Spring Clean has gone from strength to strength since first taking place in 2011, with over 10,000 volunteers rolling up their sleeves and doing their bit to spruce up their local communities.

Last year’s Spring Clean resulted in over 50 tonnes of waste being collected by Waltham Forest residents, with green-fingered residents planting over 2,000 bedding plants. Other activities included painting of street furniture, graffiti removal and tree pruning.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment said: “The Spring Clean has become a real annual tradition in Waltham Forest, and is a great example of the fantastic community spirit that exists across our borough. This year we’d like to make it our biggest Spring Clean ever, and I urge everyone to get out there and show some love for their local community.

“Our Neighbourhoods officers can give you a helping hand by providing tools and equipment, as well as taking away any waste you collect. However it doesn’t just have to be litter picking, if you have fresh idea for sprucing up your local area we want to hear about them too, and will do what we can to help.

“Volunteering is a great way to give something back to your local community and meet new people in your area. You don’t need to spare a lot of time, and even a small contribution can help to make a big difference.”

Residents, schools and community groups that would like to hold an event as part of the Spring Clean are asked to email their ideas to mcdu@walthamforest.gov.uk by Friday 3 March. Organisers are asked to provide the date, time, location for their Spring Clean event, as well as number of volunteers expected, and the Council will help by providing equipment.

Volunteers can also spread the word about Spring Clean and let everyone know how they are getting involved by using the hashtag #WFSpringClean17 on Twitter.
